Year 6: Health, Safety and Child Protection
Children should be taught the following:
- To know what cyberbullying is
- To know that when online, people should be treated respectfully
- To know that sharing intimate details online, even in private emails, can be dangerous and have serious consequences. Private information should remain private
- That what you say in a chat room or instant messaging session is live – it can’t be deleted later.
- Keep private information a secret
- Whatever you post is basically permanent. Even if you later delete it, there is a chance that it has been copied, forwarded or reposted
- All reputable video-sharing sites prohibit the unauthorized use of copyrighted material
- Be careful not to use copyrighted music tracks in videos
- Music by pop stars is copyrighted
- It is against the law to use it without permission
- Untruthful or offensive material or comments about someone on your site, could be breaking the law and could have legal consequences
- Films and music which have been commercially produced are copyrighted. It is against the law to download them unless you are using an authorised website. Prosecution is possible for illegal downloading
- Copying someone else’s work and pretending that it is your own is wrong. Websites used should be referenced
Teachers should be aware of the following:
- All Health and Safety regulations as outlined in the school policy
- The school's acceptable use policy regarding ICT
- That virus protection is an important feature and should be installed and updated on all computers
- How to prevent viruses infecting machines
- That Cyberbullying is an important issue that all teachers need to be aware of
- The school’s policy on cyberbullying and how to deal with any instances
- The implications of new technologies being used by children such as social networking and chat
- The implications of downloading media illegally
- The implications of plagiarism
