Year 5: Health, Safety and Child Protection
Children should be taught the following:
- Correct and safe use of electronic equipment
- What to do if they come across a web page that makes them feel uncomfortable or embarrassed
- What to do if they receive unpleasant emails or messages
- That people they meet online, might not be who they say they are
- Never to give out personal information or photos online
- To know that some images and text on the web are protected by copyright
- How to use email safely and respectfully, remembering that something that might hurt someone face to face, can still hurt them in an email
- That some attachments in emails can contain viruses and that they should check with an adult before they open attachments
- Know that there are ways of protecting a computer
- Not to use photos of themselves on-line
- Be aware of the implications of using webcams on-line
Teachers should know the following:
- All Health and Safety regulations as outlined in the school policy
- The school's acceptable use policy regarding ICT
- That Chat Rooms and Instant Messaging are not permitted in school, but that discussions with pupils should be carried out as they are quite likely to be using them at home
- That virus protection is an important feature and should be installed and updated on all computers
- The school’s policy on cyberbullying and how to deal with any instances
