pencilWhy use iPads for learning?

The iPad is:

  • an iBook reader | a tool for authoring and publishing iBooks | a web research tool
  • a presentational tool | a note taking device | a comic maker | a music studio
  • a video editor | an animation creator | a personal organiser ...

An iBook reader
Novels, plays, poetry and PDF files can all be read on the iPad. Many texts can be downloaded for nothing.

Reading tools
You can highlight or underline text, make notes, look up a word in the dictionary or on the web, or search inside the book. You can even use VoiceOver to have the iPad read to you. Pupils have access to access an entire library wherever they go. Publishing houses have recognised the potential of the iPad to handle multimodal content. Faber and Faber have created an App entitled ‘The Waste Land’ T.S. Eliot in conjunction with Touch Press . This digital edition of the poem carefully respects the typography and integrity of the original publication but combines this with spectacular new ways to explore and understand the poem.

Examples of the multimedia content:
A specially filmed performance of the entire poem by Fiona Shaw. Complete readings of the poem by T.S. Eliot himself (readings from two periods in his life) as well as Ted Hughes, Alec Guinness and Viggo Mortensen. Comprehensive interactive notes to help explain the many references and allusions in the poem. 35 expert video perspectives on the poem including contributions from Seamus Heaney. This iPad edition of the poem demonstrates how literature can by illuminated by this new digital medium.

A presentational tool
An iPad and Apple TV can combine to provide an advantageous alternative to more expensive, traditional interactive white boards. The use of the Apple TV in combination with an iPad provides a mobile platform from which classroom activities can be initiated. Through the use of different Apps, teachers can provide notes, display steps and processes to problems, initiate the display of media (pausing and resuming as needed from any location in the classroom), and allow students to participate from their own seats in a variety of interactive activities. Indeed pupils working in groups or working individually, using an iPad, can instantly share their work with the rest of the class providing opportunity for peer review, discussion.

iTunes U on the iPad
The new iTunes U app lets you put all the assignments and materials students need for a complete university or school course on their iPad. And they can tap into the world’s largest online catalogue of free education content from anywhere.

iPad and Music
The iPad is an extraordinary tool for music creation, the quality of the microphone and it’s ability for multi touch plus some creative uses of the motion sensing components by developers have allowed for the iPad to become a complete music suite in it’s own right.
GarageBand. Garageband is part of the iLife suite of applications and is awesomely powerful software for music creation on a Desktop Mac. On the iPad it allows anyone to create beautiful music. It has a number of tricks up it’s sleeve and complements ThumbJam rather well. Although it doesn’t have all the instruments you might expect, it does come with a Piano, Guitar, Bass, Drums, and a string section of an orchestra. Most of these come in a smart variety that offers a simplified interface but makes music creation available to all whereas ThumbJam really requires you to have a certain level of musical knowledge to create anything meaningful.
