Main teaching points based on main activity Learning objective for child to achieve

Children can practice the flat scull standing in the water so they refine the hand action. They can practice while floating in the supine position and when treading water.

Sculling is used in many aspects of swimming where the hands provide the propulsion and the support. The hands pivot at the wrist which are close to the body. The arms are straight and the whole of the arm works to create a figure of eight shape.

  • A regular continuous movement. (Flat)
  • Cupped hands - fingers together. (Flat)
  • Firm wrists. (Flat)
  • Keep hands at the same depth. (Flat)
  • Keep hands below the water. (Flat)
  • Elongated figure of 8. (Flat)
  • The water is only disturbed as small whirlpools. (Standard)

Teaching points based on other activity Learning objective for child to achieve

General lesson with children getting used to the water. You could ask them to show you the strokes they know, and this gives you some idea on their ability, confidence and apprehension.

  • Water confidence.
  • Revising safety issues.

Notes/Lesson Assessment
Do not progress to deeper water until all children are comfortable.

Remember to use floats as a resource.

Lessons will need to be repeated many times for the children to practice technique and to build stamina, they are only children and this is quite scary for them.

Other Information
The water should be at least chest deep for the step entries and about 2m for other dives.

Check all safety notes and procedures.

Check medical conditions e.g. asthma.
