I currently teach the year 1/2 class at Bryn Primary School, Port Talbot. The class contains nineteen pupils, nine Year One children and ten Year Two children. There is a very wide ability range within the class.

Our current Design and Technology unit of work is called "Eat more fruit and vegetables". This unit has run throughout the summer term. The unit develops children's understanding of designing and making with food and the importance of healthy eating. The children have been given opportunities to make choices based on the properties of different fruit and vegetables in order to make a product for a particular occasion or target group to encourage them to eat more fruit and vegetables.

Children investigate and taste different foods and develop vocabulary to describe the appearance, taste, smell and texture. This activity has allowed the children to apply hygienic practices and to use basic tools and equipment effectively and safely.

The unit allows you to change the type of fruit or vegetables, the target group or focus on a particular product. I chose to focus on salad and fruit salad. We chose our class as the target group to encourage all children to "Eat more fruit and vegetables".

The unit allows all children to take part in individual, group and whole class work. During the unit the children were able to improve their ICT skills whilst evaluating the fruit salad. The unit was also linked to language work where the Year Two children wrote a set of instructions to make a fruit salad.

We made a class fruit salad and since making it parents have commented how their children are asking for more fruit and the fruit in our "tuck tray" has increased.
