The villages which the consortium of schools serve, nestle in the hills to the north-east of Port Talbot.

The Schools Consortium consists of seven schools:

  • Abergwynfi Infants
  • Abergwynfi Junior
  • Cymer Afan Primary
  • Cymer Afan Comprehensive
  • Croeserw Primary
  • Dyffryn Primary
  • Glyncorrwg Primary

Historically the villages within the community were developed in relation to the coal mining industry and subsequently the railway.

In later years, the communities have been affected by fundamental changes caused by the transition from thriving industrial villages to communities with very limited employment opportunities. It has also been adversely affected by general reduction of job opportunities within the wider area.

The Afan Valley schools seek to promote pupils' awareness of the implications of such development for the local area and the quality of life. We would wish our pupils to be optimistic in the face of change and seek to develop pupils' confidence in their personal abilities and skills in order that they will approach the future in a positive manner.

Education systems and practices are key elements in preparing young people for life. We therefore endeavour to provide our pupils with a broad, balanced, challenging and relevant curriculum which will enable them to succeed.
