Sharing Good Practice Sessions

Using ICT to support written communication
Bernard Henderson (Swansea Assistive Technology Service)

This session, appropriate for all delegates, will consider strategies for using appropriate supportive tools to support pupils with writing difficulties. It will explore a range of popular and more specialised software and hardware currently available and include hints and tips when using Word, Clicker5, Penfriend etc.

Online Information Sharing
Tim Richards (formerly Manselton Primary) & Ceri Davies (Clase Primary)

The workshop will provide a chance to have ‘hands-on’ experience of the Inclusive Swansea Web Group including help in signing up, navigating and contributing to the group. There will also be help guides available to take away to support you when using the group at home or in school to share your experience or look for support and guidance from others in the profession.

Using ICT to support assessment & recording
Sarah Oakey-Philips (Penybryn Special)

This is an opportunity to see and discuss the 'Pen y Bryn Keyskills and Curriculum Skills revised 2010 National Curriculum for the 21st Century’ - A Precise, Clear & Manageable method of tracking, assessing and recording of pupils' individual skills, progress and outcomes on line.

Using ICT to support pupils new to English
Helen Myers & Angela Davies (EMLAS)

This session will show how a focus on a multimedia approach can facilitate EAL learners' curriculum access.  Participants will be shown a range of multilingual interactive resources suitable for use at Primary and Secondary phases which can scaffold learning, engage learners, and facilitate English language development across the curriculum. The resources will include commercially available packages, such as 'Clicker 5' and 'Talking Pen' as well as simple web applications which can be used to produce your own bilingual support materials at various levels.  Many of these approaches and resources are valuable for all learners.
A high degree of computer literacy is NOT a requirement for this workshop!

“I’ve got something to say and I want to be heard” - Our inclusive experience of using a Total Communication approach that includes Assistive Technology.
Julie Gibbs and Sue Francis (Pontarddulais Comp STF)

This session will show our approach to creating a communication supportive environment for children with severe and complex speech, language and communication needs. It will include information about our use of simple to more complex communication systems

Using ICT to Support Pupils with Dyslexia
Sheila Lewis (Penyrheol Comprehensive)

The session will focus on how ICT can be used to support Dyslexic pupils. The teaching programmes" Units of Sound", "Lexia Reading" and "Wordshark" will be shown. Software tools such as "Wordbar" and the Text Reading Software, "Read and Write Gold, Texthelp" will be demonstrated. Tools such as an Alphasmart, a Reading Pen, and screen overlays will be available to view. This session will be suitable for primary and secondary colleagues.

Multisensory Approaches including  ICT
Annette Eveleigh & Joannah Fox (Ysgol Crug Glas)

We will set up a number of different multi-sensory areas using SEN specialist and “home produced” resources that the school uses with their pupils. You will be able to spend the session exploring, playing or relaxing and Annette & Jo will be on hand to answer any questions or queries.
